Editorial policy
How we write, review and update our water damage and insurance claim guides.
Why we write these guides
Homeowners with water damage need clear answers quickly: what to do now, whether it's likely covered, and how to keep the claim on track. Our guides start with the short answer, then explain the details.
How guides are written
- We base our explanations on how standard homeowners policies are commonly worded, public information from state insurance departments, and the National Flood Insurance Program.
- We write in plain English and explain any insurance terms we use.
- We say "usually" and "often" when that's the honest answer. Your own policy and state law decide your claim.
Review
Some guides are reviewed by a licensed public adjuster. When a guide has been reviewed, the page says so.
What we don't do
- We don't promise outcomes or payouts.
- We don't let companies pay to change what a guide says.
- We don't give legal advice. For legal questions, talk to a licensed attorney in your state.
Updates
Insurance rules and policy forms change. We review guides regularly and update them when policy wording, laws or common claim practices change.
